  • 13:16 @LindenAsh: I'm thinking I need to upgrade the memory in my eeePC 1005H to 2 gig. Best Buy has a 2gig sodimm and 8 Gig SD combo for $60. #
  • 13:18 If I install MacOS on my netbook I need to put together a USB DVD drive. (of course, I also need an install disk.) #
  • 13:22 I've got $300 in the bank I was saving for #MidsouthCon, but I may end up blowing that money on computer parts. #
  • 14:45 @LindenAsh XP doesn't play nice with SSD's. And they still cost too much. #
  • 14:46 @LindenAsh I might go for a serious hardware hack to install a usb hub internally. maybe. :) #
  • 14:49 Is your mini9 already running from SSD or HD? #
  • 14:51 @LindenAsh I don't think my system has a free MiniPCIe slot ...:) #
  • 14:52 @LindenAsh I want GPS and a 3G modem....that $300 has to really stretch. #
  • 14:54 I might buy an old eeePC 701 to hack into a tablet. #
  • 14:56 @LindenAsh What OS is your mini9 running? #
  • 14:59 Looks like the older Netbooks are only $100-$150 on ebay. #
  • 15:11 @LindenAsh I dual boot XP and Linux. #
  • 15:21 The Apple Store in Saddle Creek isn't likely to sell me an install disc. Or would they? #

  • 16:44 @LindenAsh I would like to try a hackintosh install to an SD or MicroSD card. #
  • 18:03 @LindenAsh WHAT?! IPad can't make phone calls? #
  • 18:19 I thought the IPad was going to use a Hybrid Electronic Ink/LCD screen... #
  • 18:22 IPad has no SD Card Slot??? #
  • 20:19 No Ice, please from all the poor people who have to work outside at FedEx. #

I'm cold and I'm leeching...

Nov. 26th, 2009 | 09:40 am

It's Turkey Day. Yeah food.

And I'm sitting out in the cold, in front of my favorite internet leeching point.
If I had an external antenna I could get 3 different connections from here.
Why am I sitting out in this cold truck?
Well, I would go home but my brother is using all the internet there.

Still looking for a good version of Linux to run on this Netbook.
EasyPeasy perhaps?
Tiny Core Linux would be great if I could get it remastered.
Puppy Linux isn't too bad, either.
Maybe straight Debian with the Netbook kernal.
Ubuntu 9.10 doesn't boot on this for some reason. Won't boot on my desktop either.
May try 9.04 just to see how that works.

I can use skype...

Nov. 22nd, 2009 | 12:07 pm

I had a nice skype voice chat with EG last night.

EG says the place I get free internet, McAlister's Deli, is a little noisy.

From EG I learned John's skype ID, so I had a little text chat with him too.

I like skype.

I'm still searching for the perfect Linux to install on my Netbook.

A notebook computer...finally

Oct. 21st, 2009 | 01:52 pm

I can has a new netbook..

Asus EEE PC 1005HA

10.1 LED backlit screen, Windows XP, 160 gig sata hard drive, 1 gig of ram, 802.11b/g/n wireless, 4 hour battery life.

bought it on credit from TOY 'R US. $330 with tax and 15 month replacement plan after 10% off for a new store credit account.

The only problem I have with it is the glossy finish show fingerprints like you wouldn't believe.

Wanna upgrade the memory to 2 gig.

And someday maybe put in a very large hard drive.

like 4 TB...

'Cause i will surely need a 200 dollar HDD in my by then $100 netbook.

High Speed Internet...Almost

Sep. 8th, 2009 | 09:34 am

Well, my DSL almost works. If I leave the phone off the hook I can download 20-30 kilobytes a sec.
I hang up the phone, DSL dies. It only took 4 days to get it this far, although I didn't try very hard the first couple of days. I called the tech support line and after 15 minutes of the worst music I have ever heard the guy on the other end of the line told me to hook up the phone I call for support on to another line. Something about isolating the problem. Like my equipment is busted.

Last time I installed DSL out here the service took 12-14 days to get working. And for the first hour of service I got 80KB a sec. I'm assuming that they hooked me up as a business customer as they played with the system to get it working.

I also used to get 80KB from newsgroups, but overzealous protection of copyright killed news servers at either BellSouth or Millington Telephone.

So I have 256kb or 384kb DSL instead of 1.5 mb dsl like the cool people. And it doesn't work yet. And it's gonna cost $60 a month.

Hmm...I wonder how fast I can download attachments from a BigRiverInternet Email account?

Nerdy Computer Stuff

Sep. 3rd, 2009 | 06:22 pm

Installed SATA controller card in my old P4. No SATA hard drive so I also bought an adapter to convert my old 320G HDD from PATA to SATA. Soon to be upgrading to a 1TB drive.

Found something on the web about cheap storage on backblaze.com. They use 45 HDD inside 67 terabyte 4U servers for $7,867 each.

I want a SATA II 5 Port Muliplier Backplane.

Work at FedEx.

Aug. 11th, 2009 | 05:26 pm

I worked Sunday morning under the international canopy at FedEx. It was hot but there was a very nice breeze.

At first I was going to "push boxes" but then it was decided that I should hunt for the finicky little yellow and white labels, tote the boxes off the belt, then stack them in cans.

But the important thing is MORE MONEY. Time and a half for working my day off.

I'm thinking of buying a netbook.

Money

Aug. 5th, 2009 | 05:38 pm

Yay Me. My truck is finally all mine.

Now I don't have to send GMAC $285 a month.

Of course, the cost of gas will probably go up to fill the void.

"Justice League: The New Frontier"
Rated PG-13

It's basically DC Comic Heroes meets Lovecraft Horror.

But then I still like reading comics and the Lovecraft stuff is just a bonus.

Happy Birthday to Theodor Seuss Geisel (better known as Dr. Seuss).

He would have been 105 today.

Thanks to Google for letting me know.

And Thanks to Wikipedia for this:

While at Dartmouth, Geisel was caught throwing a drinking party, violating national Prohibition laws of the time. As a result, the school insisted that he resign from all extracurricular activities. In order to continue his work on Dartmouth's humor magazine, the Jack-O-Lantern, without the administration's knowledge Geisel began signing his work with the pen name "Seuss"; his first work signed as "Dr. Seuss" appeared after he graduated, six months into his work for humor magazine The Judge where his weekly feature Birdsies and Beasties appeared.

"Geisel once stated that Yertle the Turtle was Adolf Hitler."

How could I have missed that? It so obvious now. Wait. Who is "Yertle the Turtle"?

I had fun on New Years hanging out with [info]eringryffin and friends.

Desperaux was pretty cool. Sneaking in food and drink was a somewhat new experience. [info]eringryffin was kind enough to pay for everything.

I think having New Year's Eve by myself would have been terribly depressing. It is nice to have friends.

Until they start borrowing stuff...

Terry Pratchett Knighted...

Dec. 31st, 2008 | 10:16 am

I didn't even know he was nominated...

'Terry Pratchett declared himself "flabbergasted" to receive a knighthood as he led a group of writers, actors and performers honoured today.'

or in his own words...

"
Folks,

There are times when the phrase "Absolutely, totally, gobsmackingly, mindbogglingly amazed" just doesn't cover it, but I find that in the Queen's New Year Honours list I am now a Knight, for services to literature. This means that fans, while not calling me Sir, must now refrain from throwing things. Regrettably, no sword is included in the box :)

What more can a modest Knight say?

Happy New Year, which on Discworld is the Year of the Pensive Hare.

PS - We have had about twenty film crews through the office today and so you should be able to catch some footage on one channel or another.

long day at work...

Dec. 23rd, 2008 | 02:00 pm

Last night was a 6+ hour sort for FedEx nights.

We started at 11pm and I left at 6:30. But then we were almost done anyway and letting people go home if they wanted.

Sadly, I spent most of the night standing around.
